ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The State of Kerala which boasted steady monsoons and salubrious climate, is now facing the combined after effects of climate change, population pressure and unscientific land utilization. The two devastating floods of 2018 and 2019 gives an understanding that climate-change-induced floods are becoming an annual affair in the state. State is now on a massive mobilization drive, Rebuild Kerala Initiative (RKI) by exercising the principles of “Room for river” and “Living with water” in the framework of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), which has been identified as one of the four pillars of recovery strategy. Actions to prevent or reduce the risk of flood damage should include employing best practices to prevent and reduce the risk of loss such as prohibition of development in zones of flood risk and investment in structural/ non-structural flood defense. Advanced science and practice in water and flood management are required to ensure sustainable livelihoods and safeguard ecosystem.

With special focus on water management under extreme climate variations, Water Resources Department of Kerala puts forth this conference on Flood management in Kerala Scenario as a platform for practitioners, policy makers, engineers, natural and social scientists, disaster managers and researchers to come together to exchange ideas and experiences. The deliberations are expected to help formulate integrated plans, policies and strategies towards improved water security and flood management. The conference seeks to bring forward research findings, case studies, recent advances, success stories and examples of managing floods in an integrated manner.

This conference is committed to provide an interactive platform for brainstorming and sharing new concepts or methods for improving flood risk management practice in order to better cope with this kind of uncertainties.
